In the 1870 census of George Shaw and Sarah, the writing is very light and written in a backhand. The last name in the household is Ella Priest and she was 12 yrs. She had a sad life. Her parents were Gilbert Priest and Lucy Watts. Gilbert was in the Civil War for 2 months and came home with pneumonia and died. At the funeral, his wife caught measles and died 2 weeks later and also the baby. This left three children who were each claimed by uncles on both sides of the families. The uncle who given guardianship, sold the estate and turned the children out. But this is how George Leonard and Ella Priest must have met, through the Shaw's.
