Alvin Elmor Hoppes

Dutch had a difficult childhood due to the untimely death of his father prior to his birth and the death of his grandfather, who was raising him as a son. The times that Dutch grew up were hard for everyone during the great depression during the late 1920's and 1930's. He was a loving father and husband to his son and wife. He was a good provider spending most of his adult life as a truck driver for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. This occupation was seniority based which resulted in several moves early in his career and ultimately brought him to Sedalia Missouri. He always farmed on the side and farmed full time upon his retirement from driving at 57. He loved horses and had horses throughout most of his life. His early years were spent on the Swain Ranch. He spent some time with his mother and step father in Liberal Kansas but most of it was spent with his grand parents and his uncle Ole Swenson always involved in farming and ranching. He gave his son every opportunity and was primarily responsible for whatever success his son achieved. ![]()
